- Diagnostic Assessment

Dr. Iskandar does a thorough and careful assessment of new patients using a developmental biopsychosocial framework. In addition to interviewing the patient and collateral sources (e.g. spouse, siblings) when appropriate, the evaluation process frequently includes rating scales completed by the patient. He will also review previous evaluations (e.g. psychoeducational, language and neurological reports), medical tests (e.g. blood tests, MRIs, sleep studies), and consult with other medical specialists (e.g. neurologists, cardiologists). This assessment process is crucial in determining an appropriate course of treatment for each patient.

- Medication Management

Psychopharmacology can play an important role in the treatment of psychiatric problems. Dr. Iskandar views medication management as a collaborative process among patient, psychotherapist and primary care physician. Helping patients understand what medication can and cannot do in treating psychiatric disorders is an important aspect of medication management. Potential risks, benefits and alternative treatment options are carefully considered and explained before initiating treatment. Systematic and careful follow up allow for the optimization of treatment. When needed, Dr. Iskandar uses genetic testing services that can be used to evaluate the way a patient metabolizes medications and his/her likelihood of responding to certain classes of medications.

- Addiction treatment

Addiction is a multifactorial disease. Every patient is different with unique personality traits and family dynamics. After assessing all the factors involved in the patient’s addiction, including his or her weaknesses and strengths, an individualized treatment plan will be put in place. Treatments are available to help with addiction, but they are only effective if the patient is motivated enough to start.

- Brief Psychotherapy

Individual Psychotherapy: It is a form of therapy to address problems with emotions and/or behaviors. Although there are different theoretical models of psychotherapy (e.g. psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral), each relies on communication (verbal and nonverbal) as the basic tool for bringing about change in a person’s feelings and behaviors. Through individual psychotherapy, the patient can learn more appropriate ways of expressing his/her emotions. The patient also can learn new and better coping skills.

Family/Couple Psychotherapy: Conflict frequently plays a major role in family and/or couple dynamics. The causes of the conflict are typically the result of a complex interaction of child characteristics, parental issues or typical life stressors. Psychotherapeutic interventions for the family/couple conflict can include traditional couple or family therapy involving the whole family, or subgroups (e.g. siblings, mother-daughter). Behavioral techniques can be taught in parent/couple training sessions. Behavioral management techniques can often be used successfully to address the problem in the dynamic of the family or couple.
